So Ive been tinkering with the idea of doing a Beowulf of my own. Ive got the source material, in the original Anglo-Saxon, and of course Im up to date on my Heaney and Gardner. This is just something I dashed off (thanks, Monkeys!), but I do wonder if I could squeeze this in among the various smut books and my other stories. Given the positive response to my first book of poetry (#21 on Amazon right now. WHAT? Lies.), I was thinking this might be a bit of fun. Something to lay against the anvil of my mind and SWING. What do you think, my Hordelings? CREATURE Slow and silk-soft came the tread of Grendel. Creeping, skulking, thunderous as a banked cloud was he; toward the sound that spoke about and near and of but never TO him. Alien thoughts, black fish in still waters, coursed through his mind, shining and yet obscured from view to all not afloat in the ichor of isolation and doubt. Hrothgar, Hrothgar, Hrothgar muttered the creature, sinews creaking beneath flesh imbued with weird-might against the blades of bushy-bearded men. Look! Listen! See, there, a shadow large against a rough-hewn wall; hear the ragged breathing of allegory made flesh, weary with it. Feel, for a moment, a cold that fire cannot touch.
