So a while ago Wendy asked me to take a look at the statement of purpose she is using in her applications to grad school. Heres an excerpt: I am currently working with Dr. Talal El-Hefnawy in his laboratory at Florida Gulf Coast University. Over the past 8 months we have been researching and evaluating the effects of many chemicals including xenoestrogens, parabens, and alkylphenols on the biotransformation and degradation of estrogen in the liver. We have also evaluated the carcinogenic effects of these chemicals using high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, and are currently working on developing a publication for the results that we obtained in this research project. I have gained valuable research experience, which has included knowledge and skill in derivatization by ethyl acetate, high-performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and cell culture. Dr. El-Hefnawy and I are currently starting on another research project involving signal transduction pathways, and we are evaluating how these pathways can be inhibited or activated by different proteins in cell culture. I am also currently working with Dr. Sulekha Coticone developing new techniques for undergraduate biochemistry laboratories from laboratory topics that range from carbohydrates and biomolecules, to metabolism, and will also be working with the GEMS program this coming month.
