So at the races yesterday there was an incident that brought me back to my childhood of racing motocross. There was a girl in Stephens class and she was a good little driver held her own for sure and didnt take anything from the boys. She drove just as fast and hard as they did, she was an equal on the track. However, her father had to run his mouth about how she was a girl and so on and so forth. He ran his mouth so much that words were exchanged with another parent. With my past experience racing with the boys all I wanted was to be treated as an equal on the track. I was pretty appalled that the dad was throwing it in the other parent’s face that she was a girl. Growing up racing my parents did not ever rub it in anyone’s face or make a BIG deal about me being a girl in racing. Was I a little unique but only wanted to win like everyone else. From this I took that I will go out of my way to teach Ellie that she is an equal to all the boys on the track and make sure Stephen knows to run the girls just like the boys. If the girls can’t hang then they will find another sport to do. I ask this of all parents that have their daughters in a sport like racing don’t try and make excuses or boast about her just because she is a girl. Do it because you are proud of them regardless because when you say something like “wow your son just got beat by a girl” you sound simpleminded.
