So, having slept on it, heres my thought. Leaving Donovan off the roster in favor of Julian Green and/or Davis in all likelihood is a poor decision. Donovan is old and perhaps not fit, plays in the MLS which also has a late start to the season. I get that. But its tough to say when holding dependent variables that the all time leading scorer is not one of the top 23 US players. Italy took Luca Toni and Totti in 2006 over younger guys. Same with Michael Owen, was on the national team well into the backend of his career. Brian Mcbride and claudio Reyna in 2002 for the US. So there is an argument to be made both ways. But old guys have one more shot at their legacy in the WC and tend to show up on the world stage. When you look at guys like fabian johnson, mix, Davis and Zusi you should be concerned. These are not world class players. These are not competitive international players. They may help get the job done in CONCACAF but this is the WORLD CUP. Im not saying a blind squirrel cant find a nut but if it were my call, Id go with experience in someone (Donovan) who has scored in the last three cups over guys with less than three caps and less than 5 starts on their club team. I still, however, believe that we will win!!!
