So here’s a summary of some movies I saw this past week, because why not: Divergent (2014) – not my choice to see this ‘un, but for a blatant Hunger Games ripoff, it was pretty solid popcorn entertainment; if you think it looks good, you’ll love it; if not, you’ll probably find it decent to mediocre; science fiction die-hards should avoid at all costs—this is mostly a teen girl coming-of-age/empowerment tale in disguise; not sure 2 ½ hours was really warranted Coming To America (1988) – pretty unfamiliar with pre-90s Eddie Murphy movies, so in an effort to acquaint myself, I gave this a watch; it was ok....not a particularly hilarious comedy or a moving enough romance to really hold up the fun concept; honestly, I thought Arsenio Hall was way more charismatic than Murphy, given the roles; maybe I should try Beverly Hills Cop? Wreck-It Ralph (2012) – I’m a total animation junkie, so I’m surprised it took me so long to catch this; fun, original, creative, vibrant family fare that really shows Disney starting to overtake Pixar as the leading animation studio of today (*cough* Frozen *cough, cough* Monsters University); Sarah Silverman’s voice was way less annoying than expected Blackfish (2013) – the documentary that tarnished the name of Sea World, and rightfully so; not exactly eye-opening, but these stories and images will stick with you; it’s not just a movie for the animal rights sector, but it’s also for anyone who has ever given a dollar to an institution built on lies, greed, and abuse; heavy-handed, but indisputable If you’ve made it this far, good for you! You get a cookie! And by cookie, I mean Netflix recommendation. Because I saw something better than any of these movies this week, and that something was Sherlock, the BBC television series (late to the party, I know). Each episode is like its own movie, and they are all smarter and more interesting than anything up there. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch. For seriously. I mean.
