So kali and I were talking and comparing food issues in kids from when we were kids to today. When we were kids there would be maybe one or two overweight kids in a class and maybe (but often not) a kid who was lactose intolerant. We all know those numbers are way different now. Encroaching on 50% childhood obesity. I dont have numbers on food allergies and sensitivities but I do know that just in out pony program there are multiple kids with them. People blame junk food and video games. We ate TONS if junk food: 2 liters of soda, bags of chips, hostess cakes, goldfish, kraft mac & cheese. We played hours and hours and hours of video games. Maybe not quite as intensely as some kids today but I dont Think that factor on its own explains it. So my hypothesis is this: even packaged junk foods have become, somehow, a seriously greater health risk in the last 20 years. Somehow between monocultures, lab-based genetic modification, changes in processing, even lays and coke and frozen pizzas are significantly more dangerous than they used to be. Id love to figure our how I research this but both even yes Ive thought of seem like non-starters: 1) finding stored strata of processed foods from the last 20 years to analyze or 2) getting direct access to records from the big food providers and processors. I guess there might also be former employees to interview. Maybe that would be an angle.
