So one last time, here is my review of every single Coen Bros - TopicsExpress

So one last time, here is my review of every single Coen Bros movie, except one: BLOOD SIMPLE - Their first thriller; not quite as strong as what would come later, but has a sense of sophisticated storytelling. RAISING ARIZONA - Their first comedy; very enjoyable in a cartoony slapstick sort of way. MILLERS CROSSING - An incredibly smart and well acted thriller. Starts off seeming like a stylized novelty act, but the story slowly draws you in. BARTON FINK - Their first unusual outlier film; despite all its praise and Palme dOr win, I still dont know the hell this movie was about. THE HUDSUCKER PROXY - The only Coens movie I truly hated. Their Preston Sturges-style comedy just feels very dumbed-down and pandering, featuring lead characters that the Coens themselves seemed to dislike and want you to dislike. A confused movie. FARGO - A masterpiece. Strong sense of character over a unique plot. THE BIG LEBOWSKI - Generally considered their best comedy. Character driven humor over a very dense and layered story that is big on atmosphere. Also has a lot of heart, which is unusual for them. O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU - Never really felt too strongly about this one. Great cinematography and great music, but no clue what the point of it is. THE MAN WHO WASNT THERE - Loved this movie; definitely the biggest surprise in their canon! Great story, great storytelling, great score, and it all just leads to a beautiful tragic ending. INTOLERABLE CRUELTY - Yet another Preston Sturges-style comedy that I just dont care for. While not as pandering as HUDSUCKER, its the same sort of we think this is witty reparte comedy that I hated. The Coens come off like they really hate their characters sometimes. THE LADYKILLERS - The only one I havent seen and based on its negative reputation, I doubt I ever will. I did however watch the 1955 original and, frankly, I wasnt too impressed with that one either. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - Another masterpiece, though it takes multiple viewings to fully appreciate. Again the Coens demonstrate tremendous scale in setting and characters. BURN AFTER READING - A nice return to their RAISING ARIZONA style of slapstick comedy. Not great, but it made me smile and I found it to be a nice throwback. A SERIOUS MAN - I generally liked it, but have noticed more and more flaws since seeing it. The whole thing never really comes together, especially the horrible prologue scene that doesnt work at all. TRUE GRIT - Another masterpiece, which should have won Best Picture for 2010. This is just an all round great work of filmmaking that leaves you fulfilled. Ive never come across a single negative review of this film. INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS - Really beautiful film that I keep thinking about every day and whose story and haunting cinematography have really stuck with me. It honestly might just be another masterpiece.
