So the first day of leave was Monday and that happened to be the first day to work after a great Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends. So this Monday brought with it the annual fun of untangling several strands of lights that somehow became entangled while stored for the summer months. After a few colorful metaphors and some doing, several trees were done before Quentin got home from school. So the next task was to give the Harley a ride which was awesome. The weather was cool enough, not cold and the ride was great for Q and I to go to Wal Mart and pick up some colored pencils for his teacher. Uh oh said the silver machine, she was thirsty therefore a stop by the gas station had to be accomplished. After filling up with high octane, Q and I mounted the bike and hit the starter switch which resulted in a dead bike. A short for sure. We got off pushed the bike around the corner and worked over it to discover a loose positive cable on the battery. After approaching the fuel truck guy, who doesnt carry any tools, the other folks ignored this guy with a helmet on his head thinking I was some criminal and not even answering if they had a screwdriver. So off to Wal Mart on foot to get pencils and a screwdriver I did not really need. Got the goods and got back to the bike. Well seems that whomever added some equipment to the bike, never extended the bolt which now retained five cables in lieu of one. So the tightening was unsuccessful as the nut dropped down and could not be reached by the bolt. The rain started as we called for a ride. Our immediate rescue was Jennifer Fialkowski who gave us a ride to the house as the women at the house would surely not know how to work through the tool box and get all the stuff we needed. Truck in hand, Q and I went to Lowes and got a pair of bolts an 1/8 and 1/4 inch longer to try and get this done. The bile could not spend the night at Wal Mart as way to much chrome would undoubtedly be missing by morning. So with no trailer and a non-running bike, this was going to a be the only way to get it done. It was now clearly after 5, darker than a well diggers *** and raining a little harder now. We got back to the bike and tried to race against mother nature and get it running as with the rain and darkness was the cooling down effect for lack of sunshine. With two attempts we got the bolt in, all the connections and then a attempt to get it started. A turn of the key gave us power and lights and a hit of the starter. We had exhaust and a running bike now. We jumped on and raced to beat the rain. We were getting wet as we passed Clarksvilles finest about 65 mph on MLK Blvd, but I think they knew what we up against and let it ride. We got back home and the garage door was opening and Christine was there saying, now lets get the truck back too. I was willing to leave the truck in the parking lot till the next day, but not the wife. We got it done and now all the vehicles, people and pencils were home for Tuesday. We now only had to make dinner and for Petes sake have another screwdriver for the tool box. Hopefully the rest of leave doesnt require tools!
