So there is likely a meeting of the State Board of Education - TopicsExpress

So there is likely a meeting of the State Board of Education Wednesday. But there certainly hasnt been notice to the public about it. The confusion over the meeting is the latest in the squabbling between the Republican-controlled board and Democrat Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz. There was originally a Dec. 3rd strategic planning committee posted for the board, as well as a normal Dec. 4th board business meeting. Then last week Ritz said the board will have a Dec. 20th meeting – at which it will take final action on A-F grades for schools. So that left us wondering what about the Dec. 4th meeting? It is no longer posted on the Indiana Department of Education website. And yet staff with the Center for Education and Career Innovation say there will be a meeting of some kind that day. The center staffs the board. Apparently a presenter from the National Association of State Boards of Education will attend the Wednesday meeting. That is the group Ritz and Gov. Mike Pence tapped to mediate issues between the parties. Lou Ann Baker, spokeswoman for the Center for Education and Career Innovation, said the department hasnt given an agenda for the Dec. 4th meeting but board members will be on hand. No action can be taken without proper posting under Indianas Open Door law. Daniel Altman, spokesman for DOE, said the law provides for an orientation session that does not count as a meeting for purposes of posting notice. State law specifically calls it an an orientation of members of the governing body on their role and responsibilities as public officials. But it includes no other official action. Altman did not know when or where the Dec. 4th meeting would occur. journalgazette.net/article/20131202/LOCAL0202/131209897/-1/BLOGS
