So, this is sort of a follow up post to Craigs about people missing meetings. Lance Rhodes has posted on many neighborhood FB pages this morning the following: I would like to introduce you to my mother and father. They have been married since they were 15 years of age. They are now almost 80. They have celebrated 65 years of marriage. After a couple of days in the hospital, the doctor has determined there is no additional treatment available for my father. Today he is being released to return home under hospice care. It is our hope his time with us may be extended a few more days while he rest at home. My response to calls and emails may be delayed over the next few days. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. So what is my point? There are actually two. 1) it would be nice to give folks the benefit of the doubt. The people who serve as our elected representatives are human beings with a full life. They have jobs, family, and other obligations. No matter how hard they try, other things may in fact have to take precedence over their council duties at times. If in fact council members are missing a ton of meetings (or leaving early), instead of assuming they are sherking their duties, you may want to reach out to them to see if something else is going on. 2) If we want council members to ignore everything else in their life, then we need to make them a fulltime, higher paid position, like they are in Atlanta. Otherwise it would be nice to remember that all of the positions are PT positions and almost everyone on council (with the exception of Cook who is retired and Shropshire who is...well....I dont know how she supports herself) is someone with a full time job that is the one they rely on to pay their bills.
