So we fell off the wagon for a week, but were getting back on the song-by-song explanations of our whole record (which you can buy here: https://itun.es/us/5YMl2 nudge, nudge). Now were on track three, Girl: When Ben first brought this song to table, it had a very Ben Folds-y/Billy Joel feel to it, though the chorus was nearly the same as it ended up on the record. It had very busy piano chord comping in the verses, and when we brought it into the studio Dan Romer (our producer) immediately said it needed to go. In its place, he started building a beat out of 808 samples, starting with the slow kick kick kick SNAP in the verses. Then he asked Ben to play the most minimalist thing he could think of, and Dan and Tommy began working on a bass line to carry the verse. We even used a mellotron choir in most of the song (listen for it and youll be able to pick it out -- its kinda ghostly). We all knew it was awesome -- But we were also a little scared at first. Ben in particular was nervous about the genre shift. It sounded very different than anything wed done before, and it gave the bass a front seat in the arrangement, which wed always tucked away in the mix on prior records. But over time, the old version started to sound silly to us, and we found ourselves playing Girl for friends before anything else. There was just something about the new arrangement that sounded confident and breathed. Six months later, I think all three of us count Girl as one of our top few favorite songs on the record. We hope you like it too. For more on this song, check out this interview (theres a whole playlist too!): And for TOUR DATES TO OUR MEGA TOURS COMING UP: jukeboxtheghost/tour
