Socialist FAQs. Comments? Q. What is patriarchy and how is Capitalism linked to patriarchy? A. Patriarchy is the belief and system that men are the central figures of the family and society. It claims the superiority of men over women in most affairs. Women are relegated to a subordinate role and are excluded from the actual task of society building, especially in Pakistan. Men and patriarchal families commonly bring up old traditions and religious practices, and use their property ties to continue this system. Women are reduced to mere instruments of unpaid house labor and giving birth to children. The historic roots of this patriarchy are to be found in private property, more specifically, the first time humans made the transition to animal domestication, agriculture and slave ownership. Within the family, the means of production and subsistence multiplied and became concentrated in the hands of men. The issue of property inheritance was also settled in the favor of men. This initial transformation was then gradually taken to its full conclusion with the complete subjugation of women. Capitalism is the continuation of private property ownership; it is the most current form. Its influence permeates all of society from top to bottom. Since property owners are mostly men, the subjugation of women persists to this day. The equality of men and women can be achieved with the abolition of private property, through Socialism.
