Some Cross River Communities May Disappear Before 2018′ July 19th, 2013 by Share by Daily Trust Landslide scene Landslide scene Secretary of Cross River State Flood Management Committee who is also the Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Vincent Aquah has raised alarm over what he described as the possible disappearance of some communities in the state from the map due to landslide and erosion. In an interview with Daily Trust, he said studies carried out by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) recently indicated that if nothing is done soon enough to avert the flood threatening Agwagune and Umon communities in Biase Local Government Area as well as Eja in Obubra Local Government Area of the state, they could be completely washed away before 2018. Aquah said Agwagune, for instance, which was seriously affected by flood last year is still reeling from its effects. He said what is required to be done to save the communities are beyond the capacity of the state government, and pleaded for support from the Federal Government. He said the state government has put up an institutional framework on disaster management and that they have constructed five evacuation camps to enable them move affected families in Eja and other communities. Aquah said 300 communities that might be affectedthis year have been identified and that they have relief materials to cushion the possible effects. According to the SEMA boss, the flood of last year killed eleven persons, destroyed 1800 houses and washed away 82,361 farmlands. “The flood also displaced 49,000 persons and destroyed 18 churches, 13 schools and 18 markets”, he said.
