Some awesome flea market finds! A first edition copy of Lucy Fitch Perkins BELGIAN TWINS. My mom grew up on these and Ive been collecting them for years. Lovely line drawing illustrations. Ive never seen one with a dust jacket!!! Dare Wrights LITTLE ONE. A wee bit creepy, but you have to get in to her doll fantasies. Dare was the Lonely Doll herself. JACK AND THE BEANSTALK in Hexameter by Hallam Tennyson, illustrated by Randolph Caldecott, first edition 1866, lousy condition, but all the pages there. I researched this one. This was the last book illustrated by Caldecott before he tragically died in St. Augustine, Fl, at the age of 38. It is only the vivid, powerful sketches. He never did the final paintings. Hallam was Alfred Lord Tennysons eldest son. Hexameter is a metric scheme using six feet, some of which can be spondees (two long syllables) or dactyls (two short and one long), But the fifth one has to be a spondee, I think. This was the form much used in Classical Greek works such as the Iliad and the Odyssey. New vocab words: haulm the stalks of beans and peas used for animal bedding, and pavier, one who paves roads or the paving stones themselves. The giants footsteps were like pavers hitting the ground! Such delicious stuff!
