Some of my readers know I dabble in doing family trees for Glen Rock people. I currently am working on one for a member of this group. It amazes me, and them, to find out things about their ancestors they did not know, and that their loved ones have been resting in peace for 100 + years at local cemeteries. I love when I find a discovery and am able to share my information with them. Yesterday I went to Fissels Cemetery, ( located next to Susquehannock High School ) to search for some information. This cemetery is probably the oldest cemetery in Shrewsbury Township, if not Southern York County. The old section of the cemetery is well preserved, the memorial tablets, mostly made of marble, are faded but legible. What I have never seen before, untl yesterday, is that many of the tombstones are written in German, not English. helping me realize just how old this institution is...... Going to cemeteries is not exactly what many would consider having a good time, but so much can be learned from walking through the old sections, where a person can learn so much. I have said this before, and will again, share your family history with your loved ones, there is a wealth of knowledge waiting for you to discover. My reward for doing this is watching a persons reaction, when I tell them something they did not know , about their family.
