Some runners walk to warm-up for running. So is warm-up important for a walker also? When you are a beginning walker just taking off on a walk at a comfortable pace is all you need to do. When you have progressed to the power walk or the racewalk level warm-up becomes very important. When you start off walking at to fast a pace you usually feel it pretty quickly in your shins, calves and the top of your feet by the ankle. Its a good indication that your starting to fast if you have discomfort in any of these areas. Properly warming up will go a long way toward being an injury free walker. At the very least walk slower for 10 to 20 min till you start to sweat, that is a good indication that you are warmed up and ready to go faster. The warm-up is important because when muscles are cold they are easier to injure and very inefficent. When you are warmed up not only are the muscles warm but your body is channeling more blood to your muscles because you have told it you are needing to use them. This increased blood flow to the muscles is important because not only are they getting oxygen to burn the stored fuel but you are also removing the waste products from that fuel burning.
