Some thoughts on parent- teacher connections: Ive seen posts suggesting a return to a more cooperative, PTA type organization for parents and teachers to work together for the good of their school and education in general. I think the tremendous support and understanding shown by parents for teachers ( and the appreciation of teachers for that) in this dispute indicates a possible need for a more collaborative connection. PACs do a lot of excellent work and there is some teacher involvement, but the principal ( and ultimately the school board) is in control, even of funds raised by PACs for specific purposes, sometimes diverting these funds for their own projects. I believe that principals and school boards should be answerable (to some degree at leastb) to parents and teachers, not the other way around. Parent teacher associations in BC were known as Home and School Federations. In1989, after a Royal Commission on Education ( see link below), the school act was amended and the HSFs were dissolved and PACs took their place. This was the same Royal Commission that formalized public funding of private schools. It seems to me that this whole process was at least partly designed to separate teachers and parents and to move control more firmly to administration.
