Some time back, I purchased a video card which had a $20 rebate. After waiting over 2 months, I finally received an American Express card loaded with the $20. And for the next several months, it sat in the back of my wallet, forgotten. I tried to use it the other day and it had been declined. I checked the balance on the card and found that they had started charging a monthly $2 service fee, which brought the value of the card down to $16. I called American Express and told them that I had been charged a service fee on the card, but in California, it is illegal to charge service fees on gift cards. They explained that this was a REWARD card not a gift card and that after 6 months, they start charging $2/month, stressing the two are not the same. I hate lawyers.
