Some twenty years ago the family was gathered at the hospital bed side of my uncle. Hours had turned into days and we all were a long way toward silly. My cousin had laid her glasses down and we all were trying to find them. Among the dozen or so searching was my mother. There were two waiting rooms, a cafeteria and a lobby...all on three different floors. Mom was tireless. Long after everybody had given up she was still trekking up and down stairs now searching not only the rooms but the hallways between. She finally appeared and slumped down in a chair. I dont know where they could be. What do they look like exactly? My cousin said, Well...theyre silver and black. Kind of like yours. Mom said, Mine? I left my glasses at home. And there they were perched out on the end of Moms nose...my cousins long lost glasses. I hadnt thought of that story for years until yesterday. I have literally dozens of dollar store reading glasses. For the life of me I could not find a single pair. I was shrugging a jacket on when my wife said, Check in your moms room. I think I saw a pair in there. Mom was napping so I was sneaking around. I searched around her bed and her chair and then in her bathroom. On the way out, having found not one pair of my glasses, I picked up her Bible to put back in a bedside drawer. And there were my reading glasses. Not one pair...but eleven pair of top of the line dollar store glasses. One can never see too clearly. What a hoot! Just about the time I think shes turning into someone else...there she is. The same as ever.
