Somebody asked me on Saturdays gig who my fav vocalist are. (Oddly enough, they are all from the 80s or earlier. I wonder if it is because all of todays singers are auto-tuned and ghetto-yodelers....dunno). I said Id think about it, and here it is: 5. Pat Benatar - Listen To Fire and Ice. Nuff said. 4. Kelly Hansen - You may now know him from Foreigner fame, but he was great with Hurricane. 3. Stevie Wonder - Unfortunately, he probably created what I call Ghetto-yodeling (Think boys to men, Mariah, Christina Aguilera, annoying trills-for-days crap) but the man made me WANT to sing, which was the first step. VERY influential. 2. Steve Perry - One of the few guys that I ever heard better LIVE than on the record. (Get Journey- Live in Houston 1981 and you will see what I mean). Undeniably a monster singer in his prime. More musical than the pop music machine allowed him to be. 1. Jimi Jamison - By far the most underrated singer of the 80s. Admittedly, I first heard Survivor from their hits on Vital Signs, and the Rocky movies. But they released alot of great music that never made the radio. Dont believe me? Get When Seconds Count and (in my opinion their best album ever) Too Hot To Sleep. Jimi is an ultra-fluid vocalist, with huge range and great RASP! Monster. All time fav! There are more, but when I am working on chops, these are the folks I try to steal them from. Who are your favs?
