Someone I have known a long time, Janice Cantrell posted today about those who have lost a child. While I have not shared her comments, I would like to post in response. I have gone through a divorce. I have lost both parents. I cannot, however, even begin to imagine the sense of loss if I were to lose my child, even though she is grown, on her own, and well established in life. There is something about that bond that forms between a parent and a child that is equaled by no other. I dont think time erases the pain of that loss as it does other losses because something unnatural has happened when the parent outlives the child. In the place of the lost child, there become two children and two tragedies. One is the child, frozen in time, whose life was lost. The other is the child who should have been, the child whose life would still be developing. Janice, your loss is doubled because of the two child grief. My heart goes out to you and to all parents who have suffered such a loss. I do not believe that time holds a healing for that loss.
