[Someone asked why so many prominent scholars were against the political uprisings in the like of Egypt and Syria...] Look at the texts of fiqh--and even aqida (e.g. the Tahawiyya!). The general religious principle is that political uprising has been clearly and extensively warned against and condemned in the Prophetic teachings, especially when it will likely result in harm, instability, and loss of human life and wellbeing. There are stringent conditions for acceptable uprising, and none of the examples you mention fulfill them. Some stances arent about achieving benefit. Theyre about reducing harm. This is simple common sense--and established religious principle: When attainment of benefit is not likely, then harm is minimized. How many more lives need to be lost and how much more harm--in the name of religion--is needed before this is realized? And Allah is the giver of success and facilitation.
