Someone very dear to me spent a lot of his childhood in secure childrens units. It institutionalised him badly. Even years after hed left them, the slightest thing could tip him back into it. I remember how shocked I was, when he was 20, after spending a night in police custody he automatically started asking permission to take off his jumper, or go to the toilet. Super-prisons for kids is no way to develop them into people capable of coping with life. It will produce a generation of youngsters who keep re-offending in order to return to the security of the institution.
