Something really concerned me when Dave and I were agate hunting - TopicsExpress

Something really concerned me when Dave and I were agate hunting today. This particular pit, the two of us have managed to gain permission to hunt in. Several people have been coming into it lately and are, I fear, setting things up to ruin it for those of us who know how to practice common sense and safety. Not only are people showing up while construction crews are still working nearby (we were told we could hunt when work was shut down), but today, a family, (a man, woman, and two young children) was in the pit and allowing the children to recklessly run around unattended. These kids were walking along the very top edge of the pit which protrudes beyond the 50 foot walls of loose gravel and sand making them extremely unstable. Rock and dirt falls constantly from those cliff faces while in the pit. Yet, these children were dangerously close to becoming a victim of an avalanche effect, breaking bones or worse, while mom and dad were obviously too busy(?) rock hunting to care about the well being of their children. All it would take is one accident to ban those of us who work hard to build a relationship with these construction companies from ever hunting in those pits again. PLEASE people... a construction pit is NOT a playground for young children to run around in unattended. Here is a picture of the 50 foot high walls and it was the very top edge these little kids were walking and playing along. The second photo is a close up of a large boulder I caught on camera that had come loose from the top and was tumbling down the sides. DANGER!
