Something that does not make our mainstream media (so much happens we never know about in the US) - there is a genocide happening against indigenous Pacific West Papuan people who are illegally occupied since 1963 by the Indonesian gvt. They have made it illegal for the native people to dress in traditional clothes, speak their language, do ceremony or traditional rites, and raising their flag, the flag of the Morning Star that is their symbol, carries a 15 year prison term. In the last few years, mass killings have started in the villages with makeshift mass graves in drainage ditches. This does not make US mainstream media - it does not involve gold, or oil to benefit the US gvt. or military, so no intervention has happened. But indigenous Māori and Pacific women in Aotearoa New Zealand are taking action to spread the word of the massacres -Ericka Morningstar, Pacific women rise up for a Free West Papua! - Our freedom as indigenous Māori and Pacific women in Aotearoa New Zealand is inextricably bound up with that of our Pacific West Papuan brothers and sisters.- Oceania Interrupted urlmin/3hmy2 Our mouths are adorned with the Morning Star flag as symbol of enforced West Papuan silence. Our hands are bound to symbolize the lack of freedoms experienced by West Papuan people. Our voices and movement are restricted to symbolize the lack of freedom of expression of political opinion, the lack of access to just and equitable resources, the lack of access to free and independent media. Our bodies are adorned with black to celebrate the female form and to draw on black as a symbol of mourning.
