Sometimes there is a theme to the week. This week was definitely low back pain due to compression of the lumbar spine. I must have had 10 cases alone this week. Yesterday a very fit 25 year old enrolled in the Navy Officers Candidate School, presented with low back pain after running a couple of miles. Turns out his lumbar spine was compressing to make up for a lack of function in his psoas bilaterally. The psoas is the only muscle I know of that is connected to intervertebral discs. When the psoas becomes weak and tight, there is an anterior pelvic tilt and a pull on those discs. After traction his psoas became functional again. Previous therapy had been releasing his tight psoas, consequently causing the lumbar spine to compress more. Once again, dont release unless you know why.
