Sometimes what we say and what people hear are two very different - TopicsExpress

Sometimes what we say and what people hear are two very different things. I was talking with Cadence about her tournament today. We talked about how she played. We talked about what I saw in others and things she could learn from. I continually was building her up and telling her how well she did, especially as I pointed out some really great things I saw in other players. They did things that she could really learn from. It would help her game greatly. After talking for I while I could tell she was getting upset. I could see that she was starting to take things in a negative way. I stopped and asked her. “What have you heard? I have said a lot of things to you today. Can you spit it back to me and tell me what you heard?” Oh hold the phone, because here it came. Her response, “I heard that so and so is great. She body blocks amazingly. She is so aggressive. I need to be more like her.” Ok, really..did you not hear all of the great things I said to you? Did you not hear my Vince Lombardi speech? Did you not hear me talk about how to be a great athlete? That even the ones who are already great continually learn from others. You have to watch and see how they execute, how they work, how they fail, how they succeed. You have to learn from the good and bad. It is what will make you better. It is true for all of us in life. You learn from the mistakes of others so you do not make them yourself. You learn from others and their successes and follow a good example. Funny how we instead, we become jealous of those people who are succeeding. Instead of learning from them and growing from it, we become envious and try and figure it out on our own. Why do we do this? It makes no sense to me. Why do we focus on the negative aspects of what someone is saying and then hold onto it? Why do we not see and hear the uplifting encouraging voice? Why do we focus and dwell on something that makes us feel worse and then focus on it so much that it is detrimental to us? This completely blows my mind. It’s one of the reasons why I love reading the scriptures. I am so encouraged by the faith and perseverance of people like Paul and Jesus. I get to learn from the successes and failures of people like David, Saul and Moses. Life is one big learning experience. It’s how we view it that makes the difference. The choice we make to learn from it, or negatively dwell in it. To be successful, we must LEARN from it! My hope and prayer for all of my friends and family today is that we all learn and grow. That we keep our eyes fixed on Christ and His ways and examples and strive to give Him our best, never settling with remaining the same. For if He did not give us His best, we would have no hope in a better tomorrow.
