Sore eyes strikes not just in summer SORE eyes, also known as viral conjunctivitis, are among the most irritating ailments because they not only affect your vision but also your other daily activities. Among other things, sore-eyes sufferers are advised to limit contact with other people because the virus is highly contagious. At home, it is wise to refrain from sharing pillows, blankets or towels with other members of the household, because the virus is found in the tears. Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the thin covering of the eyeball and the inner eyelid caused by viruses, bacteria or allergy. Its symptoms include redness of the eyes, discomfort, burning, gritty sensation, photo sensitivity, pain, discharge, and soreness. In the Philippines, warm weather is believed to be a major contributor to the spread of viral conjunctivitis during the summer season. However, the Department of Health (DOH) has warned that sore eyes can still occur during the rainy season. Given the viral nature of conjunctivitis, the DOH said viruses are always in the air, all year round.
