Sorry if this offends anyone but its my letter based on what i think what be a better use of charity raised money. Dear Sir Bob Geldorf, When I was a little boy at junior school we were encouraged to openly sell books that contained pictures of African children, starved, mistreated and left to fend for themselves. Each picture was to be sold for 10p and when the book was empty of pictures the total would add up to a pound, this money then was sent to a charity and sent to Africa to make these poor peoples lives better. The money would provide education, farming equipment and medical supplies to villages and alike across the hot continent. Then in 1985 you goes came along with your Band Aid gig and record, a record that reportedly has sold millions and millions of copies raising millions and millions of pounds for Ethiopia and Africa, women and children across the continent were promised better education, the tools and means to farm to grow there own crops and medical supplies and vaccinations. A great concert was then organised with stars from around the world all joining in in America and at Wembley in London, it was televised to millions of people and people were asked again by yourself to dig deep and give all they can for charity to raise money for the growing crisis in Africa……..and they did Sir Bob, millions and millions of pounds were given to your charity, I call it your charity because your are the man we all associate with Band/Live Aid. By the way I went fishing for 24 hours and missed your concert but have had constant reminders of all the great you did every year since. I also have never given a penny to your charity or bought your record. This year I now read that your are on the charity Dredge again, raising money for yet another crisis in Africa, this time a rather terrible disease that (we are told) has world wide implications and we are told there is a chance it could be a world wide pandemic. So……before you pound your fists on the table again, before you show pictures of children dying in the streets before you wrench at the nations heart strings one more time I want you to consider something. I want you to put your hand on your heart and to be honest with the world and explain why all those Billions of pounds raised for Africa over the last 30 years have made very little impact on Education, farming and medical progress, three of the key things that you claimed the money would be used for…..if the money had been spent in these areas then maybe there wouldn’t be an Ebola epidemic at the moment because Africa would have all the systems in place to cope alone, bearing in mind that the publics money that you raised and that you sent to Africa would be used for Education, Farming and Medical facilities, three key ingredients needed to combat disease in society. So Sir Bob, explain away and at the same time please please tell the British public why they should give there money to a lost cause, Africa has had billions and billions of pounds given to them by the west to no avail. Its time you and all your music buddies turned and looked inwards and give something back to the people who made you all what you are today, Charity begins at home Sir Bob so why don’t you all help fix your own country, give some money to Cancer research in the UK so that we may become world leaders in finding the cure for this terrible disease that has killed and continues to kill millions world wide. Why don’t you plough some much needed money into heart disease research so that our country can be become the world leaders in curing a disease which continues to kill thousands every day instead of wasting resources on trying to educate power hungry and money greedy governments. Why don’t you pour some money into much needed health education in our country, do something about the obesity and smoking which play such a major part in the above two diseases. Do something good Sir Bob, Fix Britain first. Sincerely Steve Habbishaw
