Sorry to post on such a serious topic, but I needed to share this information because this has affected someone very close to me. Depression in children/teenagers is very easy to miss because it is often confused with the typical signs of puberty such as withdrawal, moodiness and other behavioral changes . Depression can be misdiagnosed as ADHD or Anxiety (although it is possible to have these as well) and can be life-threatening if not treated. When a child withdraws and doesnt respond to most or all of their friends, this is a severe warning sign. Signs and symptoms of depression in children may include: -Attitude problems (mouthing off, eye-rolling, etc.) -Low self-esteem -Poor self-body image -Can appear as aloof and uncaring to others -Can appear as overly serious -Irritability or anger -Continuous feelings of sadness and hopelessness -Social withdrawal -Increased sensitivity to rejection -Changes in appetite -- either increased or decreased -Changes in sleep -- sleeplessness or excessive sleep -Vocal outbursts or crying -Difficulty concentrating -Fatigue and low energy -Physical complaints (such as stomachaches, headaches) that dont respond to treatment -Reduced ability to function during events and activities at home or with friends, in school, extracurricular activities, and in other hobbies or interests -Feelings of worthlessness or guilt -Impaired thinking or concentration -Thoughts of death or suicide Thanks for reading.
