Special Weather Update Fort Kent, Maine & Vicinity 7:00 PM EDT | Wednesday, 19 March 2014 >>Winter Storm Warning in effect from March 19, 11:00 PM EDT until March 20, 04:00 PM EDT Current radar imagery shows overrunning precipitation beginning to move into the region as a strong low pressure system from the Great Lakes moves towards the Valley. The chance that a deformation zone* may form over the region and enhance snowfall amounts is prompting the US National Weather Service Caribou ME to issue the warning. Presently, around 6-10 inches of snow are anticipated with this system beginning tonight and lasting through Thursday afternoon. Downeast Maine will see snow to start, followed by a wintery mix, and finally rain as warmer air is drawn into the region. For Fort Kent and most of the Saint John Valley, current atmospheric sounding models indicate that this will remain an all snow event. Snow winds down to snow showers Thursday night with these lingering into Friday as the upper low and trough circulate across the region. High pressure will build in later Friday with partly cloudy conditions heading into Saturday -- before skies cloud up with another frontal system affecting the area Saturday afternoon and evening, though presently it looks to be a faster moving clipper system, so snowfall totals should be lower than Thursdays storm. Oh, and its the first day of spring (12:57 PM EDT Thursday, 20 March 2014).... *A deformation zone is a complex atmospheric interaction wherein (simply put) lower level winds converge (blow towards each other) and winds higher aloft spread out (diverge) producing an area in the atmosphere that needs to be filled in (because it has been deformed), so the air lower down rises (lifts) creating lower pressure, condensation, and higher precipitation (and in the winter, usually heavier snow bands). 24-Hour Snowfall Accumulation ending at 8 AM EDT Friday, 21 March 2014 (Weather Prediction Center)
