Speech I gave at the ceremony - TopicsExpress

Speech I gave at the ceremony yesterday- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of the Whitehorse Legion, I would like to thank you for taking the time to attend todays ceremony. I would like to take this opportunity to speak to you briefly about sacrifice. Having been a soldier once, I can tell you, that every veteran and service member here is intimately and completely familiar with the concept of sacrifice. In order to serve, you must be willing to sacrifice. There are many jobs that are dangerous, many that have poor working conditions, and many that have caused death and injury, but only in military service can you be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice, to offer up your life for the benefit of others. This is why sacrifice is at the heart of service. A thousand years ago, a soldier at war was cold, wet, hungry, thirsty, scared, exhausted, lonely, and worried about their family at home. Soldiers at war today, are all these things and more. A service member faces these deprivations, faces wounds to body and wounds to mind, and faces death, not out of hatred for an enemy, but out of love. Love for their families, for their comrades, for their country, and for their way of life. A service member makes sacrifices to protect these things. We enjoy freedom and the opportunity to live in a safe country, but this freedom comes at a great cost. That is why the service members who made the ultimate sacrifice must never be forgotten. Thank you
