Spent most of the day researching the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa, particularly looking at the long-term economic impact both for Africa itself and the global market (which includes the U.S) as well. At the moment both my mind and my heart hurt. My mind hurts from all the research and reading. My heart hurts for the people of Africa. To be honest, the most distressing thought is that the socioeconomic factors that enabled and exacerbated this epidemic have only been strengthened now by the negative financial fallout. Without some serious and concerted efforts focused on development, its only a matter of time before we see this tragic story play out again on the international stage... I hope that we as a nation wont return to the days of our earlier isolationism and apathy. We have the capability, the courage, and the commitment to make the world a better place for everyone, not just ourselves, if we will but remain involved and compassionate.
