Spent yesterday in Shanghai! China was not like anything I ever expected! Shanghai is very western and cosmopolitan, massive skyscrapers, gridlock, SMOG like you havent seen in years. We went to the town of Suzhou that dates back to 600 BC and took a gondola-type boat ride on the grand canal there that was dug by hand 1300 years ago. Finally also had a great meal in Suzhou- no dumplings but a wonderful meal of rice, pork, fish, veggies, etc. We went to the embroidery and silk institute there and saw the most fantastic handiwork. These ladies embroider with such fine needles and single strands of silk so that their works looks like a paintings. No pictures were allowed, unfortunately, but these ladies are really masters of their craft! Trip is winding down, 3 days until we disembark in Osaka for a 2 day land tour. Home in 7 days!
