Spina Bifida awareness: Day 26! Brace types I planned on doing - TopicsExpress

Spina Bifida awareness: Day 26! Brace types I planned on doing pictures with this post. But, I dont really have the time this morning. So, theyll have to come another day. Anywho, I wear HKAFOs....which means hip-knee-ankle-foot orthotics. Which means, they control all the pivot points from my hips to my toes. There are KAFOs and AFOs also. My paralysis is such that I dont have enough control to keep my torso upright on my own. So, my braces come to the bottom of my chest...theyre pretty much a full body cast. And I walk with crutches (or, canes as I like to call them). I walked with a walker when I was younger...and for a while I think I may have had both. I didnt get my first wheelchair until 2nd grade and until 6th grade it was only meant for long distances (the mall, canfield fair, disney world, etc). 6th grade I switched orthopedic doctors and they told me the growth plates in my knees were separated. So, I spent a total of a year in a brace with one of my legs sticking straight out in front of me in my chair (6 months for one leg, 6 for another). Turns out, my growth plates just grew funny, but, it was enough that I decided I liked my wheelchair MUCH better than my braces and after many head-to-heads with the parental units, I won the battle. I walked a couple of times as a Freshman, but, that was it.....until B helped them win the war & convinced me to go get recasted for new braces at the age of 29.
