DELAYED EFFECT: MLB DRUG BANS MIGHT NOT KICK IN UNTIL 2014 The executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association said any players punished in connection to the Biogenesis performance-enhancing drug scandal might not serve their suspensions until next season. Michael Weiner said he believes MLB will present its finding to the players’ association “within the next month,” adding that commissioner Bud Selig could suspend players for “five games or 500 games” because he would “not be bound by the scale we have in the basic (collective bargaining) agreement” because the players involved did not fail drug tests and are being investigated for “non-analytical” reasons. KURTAIN CALL: LAKERS ‘CLOSE’ TO REHIRING RAMBIS Long before the Los Angeles Lakers rented Dwight “Superman” Howard for one forgettable season, the franchise had another “Superman,” Kurt Rambis. Given the nickname by legendary broadcaster Chick Hearn for the thick-rimmed black glasses he wore during his playing days with the team, in reference to Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, the Lakers are on the verge of rehiring Rambis as an assistant coach, a title he held during all five of the championships the team won with Phil Jackson. A league source says both sides are “close” to finalizing a deal. HEAT WAIVE: MIAMI MAKES MIKE MILLER AMNESTY CASUALTY Despite team president Pat Riley saying recently he wanted to “keep this team intact has long as we can because we have a championship basketball team here,” the Miami Heat Tuesday waived veteran Mike Miller. By using the amnesty provision, the Heat will save close to $17 million in luxury taxes this season and cut their projected $33 million tax bill by half.
