St. Macarius: The heart itself is but a small vessel, yet - TopicsExpress

St. Macarius: The heart itself is but a small vessel, yet dragons are there, and there are also lions; there are poisonous beasts and all the treasures of evil. But there too is God, the angels, the life and the kingdom, the light and the apostles, the heavenly cities and the treasuries of grace—all things are there. Recalls St. Augustine: Great is this power of memory, exceeding great, O my God—an inner chamber large and boundless! Who has plumbed the depths thereof? ...A great admiration rises upon me; astonishment seizes me. And men go forth to wonder at the heights of mountains, the huge waves of the sea, the broad flow of the rivers, the extent of the ocean, and the courses of the stars, and omit to wonder at themselves. …But where in my memory do You abide, O Lord? ...What manner of chamber have You there formed for Yourself? ...You have granted this honour to my memory, to take up Your abode in it.
