Staffs CC press release from today. Maintenance work on local landmark scheduled for the summer Essential maintenance work to protect a Grade II Listed Staffordshire footbridge will take place this summer. Work to improve the supporting pillars on the Ferry Bridge in Burton will mean the foundations will be strengthened and provide lasting protection to the bridge structure. The work was originally due to start last autumn, but needed to be rescheduled due to continued high water levels. Initial investigatory work has started and this will continue in coming weeks. Bespoke steel and carbon fibre components are needed due to the bridge’s listed status. Throughout the pillar repair project people will continue to be able to use the bridge. In future years it is intended that additional work will take place to improve the walkway and other parts of the bridge. Staffordshire County Council will lead the project in partnership with East Staffordshire Borough Council and English Heritage. Ferry Bridge was opened in 1889, the same year as the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It replaced the Burton to Stapenhill ferry service across the River Trent and soon became a Staffordshire landmark. Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet support member for transport Simon Tagg said: “Burton’s Ferry Bridge is an historic landmark for both the town and the county and it is important that we preserve it for future generations. This is essential maintenance work to the bridge’s supporting pillars and while people may not be able to see a great deal when completed, it is vital that we complete the project to ensure it is safe. In future years we hope to carry out more improvements on the walkway and other bridge features. The bridge will remain open throughout the works period so no-one will be inconvenienced. It is important that we can improve access and transport connections but this project is also about preserving Staffordshire’s history.” I am still holding a site visit for anyone still interested. Friday 28th (tomorrow) 6 p.m. at the Ferry Bridge
