Stars-Botak continues its reign AILYN AGONIA DOHA THE crowd’s favourite team Stars-Botak claimed the top spot in the overall team standing of the ongoing Pinoy Basketball of Qatar’s (PIBAQ) Power Horse Energy Drink Cup 2013. In a recent game held at the Al Gharafa Training Gym, the number one contender in the tournament defeated team One Family-Office System with the final score 87-78. The combined force of Stars-Botak’s main players Ronnie Cajayon and Bryan Tolentino proved to be too much for their opponent. Cajayon scored 18 points while Tolentino’s stellar performance resulted in 17 points. Their teammate Dennis Cabigkis with 17 points also contributed to the Star Botak’s big win. Coach Norman Maguinao and assistant coach Chris Guerrero look forward to repeating their impressive performance throughout the tournament. Stars-Botak’s team standing to date is four wins and zero loss. In another featured game of the day, the team Batang-Sanna upset team Unibeton with a fourpoint advantage, 80-76. The see-saw match had the team tied at 24 in the first quarter of the game as well as in the second quarter at 43. After the half-time break, team Unibeton pulled away from its opponent to wrap up third quarter with a mere two-point lead, 59-57. But they were unable to sustain their momentum, especially when Unibeton’s power forward Melvin de Lara was charged with unsportsmanlike foul by referee Aries Fernandez with three minutes left for the blowing of the final whistle. Batang-Sanna took advantage of the situation and bagged the win. Meanwhile, team QAFAC registered their first win in the tourney when they defeated KBAS Contracting team with the final score of 85-79. Their sweet victory after three consecutive losses was a joint effort of John Paul Baluyot who made 32 points and Elmer Santander 24 points. The other game results: IMCO Engineering defeated Gulf Warehousing Co with the final score 80-52. QDVC LRT reigned over Mercury Engineering with 27 points to end their match at 77-50. QP Dukhan won over CheChie team with the score 79-51 while NAHKOWH bagged a big win against Diplomatic Club at 85-62.
