Statement by Ambassador James B. Cunningham on the Inauguration of Dr. Ashraf Ghani as President of Afghanistan I am pleased to celebrate this historic moment with the people of Afghanistan as they witness the first peaceful, democratic transfer of power with the inauguration of Dr. Ashraf Ghani as President. We look forward to working closely with President Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah as they form a strong national unity government that will serve the people of Afghanistan and work for the security, peace and prosperity that the Afghan people want, and deserve. I urge all Afghans to give their full support and encouragement to the new government and its leaders. Afghanistan must take advantage of this pivotal moment in Afghanistan’s history. There is great opportunity ahead for a unified Afghanistan which will have the support of the United States, and Afghanistan’s other international partners. The United States is eager to begin this new chapter in our enduring partnership with Afghanistan.
