Statement from Orthodox Church: The Coptic Orthodox Archdiocese of North America prays fervently for peace in Egypt, and calls upon the global community to likewise unite in prayer for the protection of our Egyptian brothers and sisters who struggle against violent extremism and for the future of our homeland. As Christians, it is our responsibility to pursue justice and witness to the truth. In the last two days alone, extremists purporting to protest in support of “democracy” have attacked over fifty churches and Christian institutions and countless Christian homes and businesses throughout Egypt. These unprovoked attacks upon Egypt’s Christians have, inexplicably, been overlooked by the global community, which has likewise overlooked the fact that the protesters who have attempted to paralyze the country over the last several weeks have not hesitated to use violence to further their self-serving political objectives. In his statement earlier today, President Obama extolled the principles of “nonviolence, a respect for universal rights, and a process for political and economic reform.” However, these principles are unachievable unless those individuals who seek to eradicate Egypt’s Christians are brought to justice. Any ally of Egypt must recognize that those who would employ terrorist tactics and sectarian violence in an effort to intimidate and acquire power do not share the values of the civilized world and cannot be a partner for peace. We echo the words of His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, who emphasizes that the life of every Egyptian is precious, and leads us in prayer for an end to all violence. We are steadfast in our faith in God and the Egyptian people, and look forward to Egypt’s return to peace and prosperity.
