Status Update: The separation of Church and State. I recently had a discussion with some friends, some liberal, about the separation of Church and State. After listening to them tell me they werent sure if Sep of Church/State was in the Constitution or Bill of Rights I asked them...have you ever heard of the Northwest Ordinance? The second Congress of the United States in the year 1787 passed a law called the Northwest Ordinance. Its purpose was to establish guide lines for accepting new states into the growing United States of America. One of its stated objectives required any applying territory to become a state had to agree to establish a school system that taught its students “religion, morals, and knowledge” – in that order. Congress even supported that the Bible should be the book that is used to teach students to read. This wasnt changed until 1963 when the Supreme Court got involved and what was stated by the founding fathers was reversed. Remember.....Northwest Ordinance, 1-Religion, 2-Morals, 3-knowledge....in that order. Then the courts got involved in something that had been working for nearly 200 years....just a few judges decided, not Congress or the President, appointed (not elected) Supreme Court Judges started the decline of a nation.
