Stepladders now on special, only $9 each! The Stepladder Ginger is a beauty, the foliage is like velvet and it is bright green! .95 each Costus Malortieanus, more commonly known as Stepladder Ginger, is a member of the Ginger family (surprise surprise!) It has fleshy green leaves which are characterised by a soft, velvety down-it is not only a lovely plant to look at but also very stroke-able! It has brightly coloured flowers in a striking yellow and red stripe, and will bring a splash of colour to your borders. This is a very easy plant to grow, as it will tolerate a variety of conditions and varying types of soils and sunlight-of course, it has its favourites, but it is very forgiving and you will find no problems in cultivating your own Stepladder Ginger in your garden. Soil Well draining, fertile soil that retains moisture well is best, as Stepladder Ginger likes to keep its toes slightly damp. It responds badly to drying out, so make sure that you use soil than holds moisture to the roots without soaking them. Conditions Stepladder Ginger likes to be in the shade, with filtered sunshine. It grows well under other taller plants and can make the most of the sun protection, but you can equally as well grow it indoors in a pot. Keep this plant well watered as a prolonged or sudden drought can seriously damage it. Feeding A good soil and plenty of water should be all you need to keep this easygoing plant happy, but a little green fertiliser once in a while never hurts any plant, and you should always add nutrients to the soil if you see the plant looking droopy. Temperature The best conditions for Stepladder Ginger are tropical or subtropical climates-but it will cope with colder conditions. It will thrive best with humidity and warmth, but it will tend to wilt in direct sunlight after more than a couple of hours so try to plant it in a shady spot, indoors or out.
