Steve Martin attributes his success on his ability to stay focused - TopicsExpress

Steve Martin attributes his success on his ability to stay focused on perfecting just a few loves in his life: comedy, juggling, and banjo playing. Hes brilliant at all three. He said he wanted to do so much but knew hed spread himself too thin to truly succeed. I think about this often. Im lucky I get to focus on art at work and at home. Im crazy happy with the stuff I get to do at work, but am all over the place on my personal stuff. The good news is Im building a variety of skills. However, when I consider contemporary master artists ranging from those like James Gurney to James Jean to Mark Ryden, and my college peer Nathan Fowkes, and our teacher, Leon Parson... I see a focus on something... All their own... the traditional with a heavy dose of self. The stress here is on the traditional. They constantly study the world about them. I tend to refer to it, the point being: I need to go back and learn the basics. I work hard, but most of my energy goes to faking it til it looks right... I learn the hard way! Ha! My goal is to better ground my work with better know-how. Ill be revisiting anatomy, perspective, color theory, and drawing from life... Sketches and plein air painting -all of these Im tragically marginally versed in. Never too late for this stuff.
