Steve Threlfo returned to complete the final follow up steps for the previous training in the use and servicing of the 8 donated anaesthetic machines. In association with Ngoc (his interpreter) and Hai (local hospital engineer) they re-wrote the operating manuals in user friendly Vietnamese. Steve also added to their store of spare parts and continued exploring trouble shooting and maintenance concepts. This experience has been a new approach for the bio-med engineers in Da Lat in demonstrating the importance of upkeep of equipment for staff and patient safety as well as greatly reducing replacement costs . The success of this project that began in 2011 has been greatly assisted by various interpreters over the years; support from a work colleague (named Stein) on the first trip; a Vietnamese born biomedical technical officer based at St George Hospital Sydney(named La Vu) who provided support, significant technical assistance and communication skills. Finally the success is largely due to Steves expertise and gentle, respectful approach with measured instruction, thorough preparation leaving behind useful and practical applications that are meaningful for his Vietnamese colleagues.
