Steve signing in at 8:06 AM. With patchy fog this morning, temperatures are in the upper 60s to lower 70s, 68.6° at Burke Weather in Valdese. Fog should burn off before 10 AM, leaving partly to mostly cloudy skies. Scattered showers and thunderstorms should develop this afternoon with the most widespread activity over the higher elevations. It will be warmer today with highs in the mid to upper 80s. Showers die off over the foothills this evening, possibly continuing a while longer over the mountains. A front approaches Thursday. It looks like the front will cross the 4 county area early to mid afternoon. Some instability builds up ahead of the front so showers and thunderstorms are a good bet with the frontal passage. I think the chances of any severe storms will be greater east of the I-77 corridor since frontal passage there wont occur until later in the afternoon, allowing the atmosphere to destabilize even more. In addition, the winds aloft may be a little stronger to our east. Some of us, especially in the eastern half of Catawba County could see a strong storm with frequent lightning, briefly gusty winds and heavy rain but nothing terribly out of the ordinary for this time of year is expected. Behind the front, it wont be a whole lot cooler but the air will be a bit drier. This means we could have back to back rain-free days Friday and Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 80s. Overall our weekend is not looking too bad with the next chance of PM thunderstorms on Sunday. On Monday, another front approaches from the west and north bring a chance of more afternoon showers and storms. The difference is, behind this front, there is a better chance of cooler, drier and more pleasant air for the middle of next week.
