Steve signing in at 8:14 AM. Skies are clear to partly cloudy in the 4 county area this morning, mainly high clouds, with temperatures ranging from 63° at Table Rock to 68° at Hickory Regional and 70° at Brindletown. Today should be partly sunny with warm temperatures and some humidity this afternoon, temperatures rising to the mid to upper 80s. A frontal boundary stretches roughly along the Ohio River this morning, producing scattered showers and storms from the Memphis area to eastern Kentucky. This front will move eastward during the day. Pre-frontal, mainly scattered thunderstorms should develop this afternoon over most of the area with a few stronger storms possible, especially in the mountains. Biggest threats are heavy rains and strong, gusty winds. Tonight the front slows down as it moves into our area and stalls just to our south somewhere along the NC/SC state line. Showers will wind down a bit overnight although an isolated shower or storm is possible just about anytime into the early morning Friday. Friday we should be on the north side of the front so temperatures should be several degrees cooler, mainly in the 70s. It will be mostly cloudy and with more of an easterly surface flow, upslope showers and storms could develop just about any time. Activity could actually ramp up Friday evening especially if the front tries to drift northward toward us, with more concentrated showers and embedded thunderstorms. I believe our heaviest rain potential exists Friday night into early Saturday morning. The forecast for Saturdays barbecue looks pretty pessimistic right now but Im not sure Im in total agreement. What I see is that well start out rainy but as midday approaches, the rain should taper off and end and we should have just cloudy skies by the time the barbecue begins. We may even see a glimpse or two of the sun through mid-afternoon with temperatures possibly making it into the mid 70s. Another disturbance may trigger more showers later in the afternoon but projected rainfall totals Saturday afternoon look unimpressive at this point, suggesting that any showers that do fire up should be more of the nuisance variety than a widespread, prolonged phenomenon. Come to the barbecue, bring your umbrella just in case, and enjoy the festivities. I have guarded optimism at this point that most of the time conditions should be dry. Another disturbance Saturday night into Sunday is likely to bring us more rain. A cool air wedge should be in place and once here is not likely to break until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week when another frontal system pushes through. Expect cloudy and damp conditions into the early week with below normal high temperatures mainly in the mid 70s. The anticipated solar flare today should have minimal impact on satellite and electronic transmissions. The tropics are getting a little more interesting but there is nothing of concern for us at the moment.
