Since the beginning of May and the warmer weather, 15% of all home burglaries in Hull were committed by burglars entering insecure properties. The 39 dwelling burglaries committed in the city could have been avoided, if the victim had locked thedoors andkept windows in unoccupied rooms secure. Burglars always look for the easy option and an unlocked door or open window is an opportunity they seldom miss. PC Andy Allen, Hull’s Crime Reduction Officer said: "Burglary figures have been reducing over the past 5 years, but warm weather always brings with it an increase, due to victims leaving windows and doors open for ventilation. “It doesn’t matter whether you are in the house or not, it only takes seconds to enter a property and steal your handbag or wallet from the kitchen work top or hallway. Always keep your doors locked and close windows if you have to leave the room, even for a few seconds. “Sadly these burglaries can occur in the time it takes you to make a cup of tea or hang out the washing. Insecure burglary can be prevented; keep your doors and windows locked and make sure all your property is identifiable.
