#StopYuLin2015 bring you the origin of the infamous Yulin Dog & Cat eating festival: Part 4. Chinese Traditions & culture surrounding the Yulin Festival. Yulin, Guangi is publicised as one of the most developed cities, a historic city of 6 million people with tradition, culture and specialty snacks widely loved by people all over the country - men, women, young & old. Some people in Yulin (as well as other areas of China) included dogs, cats, snakes & donkeys in their diet at any time of the year but they were in the minority. The first mention of such a food fair involving dogs in Yulin was the Yulin drug Fair in 2009 which was scheduled for October 2010 but was brought forward to 17th -21st June (summer solstice) with a health food element added on the last day known as summer solstice litchi dogs day In April 2010 a huge promotion of this festival was made by Yulin Evening News - it was promoted by Yulin Municipal Bureau of Tourism as a health food fair featuring heat & passion. Yulin TV gave it the full promotion too as the first health food festival & it received full media coverage. Dog traffickers & local businessmen in China are very good at creating folklore when it suits them for profit & word started spreading about this festival. People started making special trips from Wuzhou, Guigang, Nanning, Beihai, Qinzhou and other places around to experience the Yulin feast described as healthy & spectacular. Advertising was everywhere & the dog stalls & restaurants sold out. More mobile dog meat businesses were set up to feed & supply the demand. Numbers of dogs consumed show reports between 10,000 & 40,000. Numbers of cats consumed ranges from 4,000 to 10,000 for this event. The naturally perfumed lychee is served in its red skins to peel & eat raw or cooked. Lychee wine is drank alongside the cat & dog meat which is cooked in strong ginger & spices to give heat to the consumer said to help them produce heat in a cold winter. On June 21st, Yulin is brightly lit, stalls are everywhere, the streets are littered with bright red lychee skins. The streets are crowded with tourists & people keen to bond & make friends & alliances. People drink & play guessing games throughout the night. Ironically it is regarded as a healthcare festival. In early June, there are many reports of family dogs going missing in China. To conclude - This festival is not tradition or part of ancient Yulin culture - it is a profit-driven activity that is becoming a habit regarded by many of us as bad taste. People in certain parts of China have included dog & cat in their diet since ancient times & it appeared to be naturally phasing out but the dog traffickers & businesses have revived this unhealthy habit. There seems to be no interest or concerns from consumers regarding the origin or proven health properties of this meat - The Yulin dog & cat eating Festival is new & appears to have taken over from the 600 year old dog eating festival which was banned in 2011. The Jinhua Hutou Dog Meat Festival, as it is called, was abruptly canceled last week after local officials were shamed by an online campaign begun by animal rights advocates. Gruesome photographs taken at past festivals that show canine carcasses, some bloody and others cooked, circulated on Chinese microblogs, creating popular pressure against the festival, which was set for October. - this gives us hope that we can get the same result in Yulin.
