Stream of Consciousness: When things seem challenging in my - TopicsExpress

Stream of Consciousness: When things seem challenging in my life, I remember the sacrifices of my ancestors, my parents, and my people who overcame European colonization and who against all odds liberated their country after three decades of brutal struggle. I think of my Uncle Seyoum (RIP) who headed the Eritrean Liberation Front and continued to work on behalf of Eritrea, even in the aftermath of liberation (1991). I think of my mother who escaped her village at age 14 to join the struggle for over a decade. I think of my father who left his comfortable life & career in Ethiopia to join the movement. I think of the racism, xenophobia, misogyny and classism that my single mother had to navigate so that I might be here, in this moment, working my butt off in San Francisco. I think of Eritreans languishing within Eritrea and in refugee camps around the world who would give anything to have access to the basic human rights that I enjoy. No time for pity parties. Not even a second. Just immense gratitude. And humility at the opportunities which I am fortunate enough to access.
